How to Fix Dry Lawn Spots in the Peak of Summer

During the hot summer of months in Utah, most lawns get yellow or brown spots caused by a lack of water. Here are the basic steps to getting them green again:

Lawn water measuring cups

  • Make sure your sprinkler system is set to run 3 days a week, starting around 2-4 a.m.

  • Run each zone of your sprinkler system to make sure the entire lawn is getting covered.

  • Place measuring cups in the stressed areas to make sure they’re getting 1/2 inch after each watering. Here is a link to measuring cups on Amazon - https://a.co/d/dzUrhyC

  • If you can’t fix the sprinkler system immediately, water the struggling areas with a hose. It’s best if you can attach an oscillating sprinkler to the hose. Here’s one on Amazon - https://a.co/d/5UCHi4J

  • Do NOT overwater! This can make the situation worse by causing thatch buildup, nutrient leaching, and fungus growth.

  • The grass patches that are yellow and crunchy should green up within 2 weeks. Sections that are already brown and brittle might not recover. You may need to seed or resod in the fall.
