How to Fix Dry Lawn Spots in the Peak of Summer
During the hot summer of months in Utah, most lawns get yellow or brown spots caused by a lack of water. Here are the basic steps to getting them green again:
Lawn water measuring cups
Make sure your sprinkler system is set to run 3 days a week, starting around 2-4 a.m.
Run each zone of your sprinkler system to make sure the entire lawn is getting covered.
Place measuring cups in the stressed areas to make sure they’re getting 1/2 inch after each watering. Here is a link to measuring cups on Amazon - https://a.co/d/dzUrhyC
If you can’t fix the sprinkler system immediately, water the struggling areas with a hose. It’s best if you can attach an oscillating sprinkler to the hose. Here’s one on Amazon - https://a.co/d/5UCHi4J
Do NOT overwater! This can make the situation worse by causing thatch buildup, nutrient leaching, and fungus growth.
The grass patches that are yellow and crunchy should green up within 2 weeks. Sections that are already brown and brittle might not recover. You may need to seed or resod in the fall.
